New Amsterdam Public is a non-profit organization that is lobbying "to establish New York's first year-round, indoor public market." Local and regional farmers and food purveyors would have a permanent home in the vacated warehouses of the South Street Seaport. As an avid foodie, it sounds like a perfect addition to the city. The handful of Greenmarkets around the city are wonderful, and it would be amazing to have an always-open alternative to find fresh vegetables, artisanal cheeses and homemade breads.
The interest in farmers' markets in New York, and other cities all over the US, is indicative of the broader cultural shift towards authentic experiences. It's no surprise that stores - like WholeFoods - that strive to emulate the original farmers' market experience are achieving so much success.
