The beautiful loft that once encapsulated our collective creative energy is now quiet. The walls are bare, the ceiling fans, as if suspended in time, are still. The only trace of our former presence is the skeleton of the steal partition - once draped with flowing fabrics - and the words of Sir Isaac Newton above the East facing windows: "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”.
On August 24th, after weeks of preparation, we completed our move to the Butterick Building. On our last visit to the old office space we took this picture, in memory of seven good years.
The first few weeks in our new space were spent unpacking and setting up. It wasn’t until the plants were brought in and the artwork was mounted that the new space started to feel like Pompei A.D. again. Arriving here has given us the opportunity to, in a lot of ways, start fresh – purging old material, reorganizing the libraries and acquainting ourselves with a new environment. There is something revitalizing about the process of moving. We have also used the move as an opportunity to introduce a Green initiative into our everyday business in the new office space. Below is a list of some of the sustainable practices we are currently participating in, and some which we hope to implement in the coming weeks:
Inside the office:
-All cleaning supplies are organic, non-toxic and biodegradable.
-Paper towels are made from recycled material.
-The kitchen tap and refrigerator have water filtration systems, and we have stopped using bottled water.
-We use glass and ceramic for food service.
-We purchase fair trade coffee, milk and cream.
-We have cut down on the use of plastic bags throughout the office.
-Our electric devices are connected to power strips that are turned off when not in use.
-Clients receive content either through DVD or by email.
In the coming weeks:
-We will be installing hand dryers into the bathrooms.
-We will purchase Green power from Con-Edison.
-We will begin to use an environmentally friendly car service, and plan travel through a service that calculates our carbon footprint.
During travel:
-We will stop using hotel supplied products and bring own products in reusable containers.
-We will work on traveling with less luggage.
-We will travel with a small hard drive rather than paper.
-We will stay in environmentally-friendly hotels.
