Gotham Writers Workshop: Short-Story Writing
“Everyone wants to be a writer at one time or another — after the right amount of wine or coffee, after a birthday ending in zero, after getting dumped or falling in love, while traveling or incarcerated — and most shy away, confronted with a first line that leads nowhere, told by a narrator who'd rather sleep through the rest of the story. But good writing doesn't require a genius' touch, and there are straightforward, time-tested tips to guide you past the first 15 words (here's two from us: don't open stories with, "This one time," or introduce speech with, "And he was all like"). Tonight, playwright and short-fiction author Alex Mindt helps would-be scribes channel their creative energies into legible and (perhaps) publishable short stories. - Joel Withrow”
