The ideas that have grabbed our attention today

Pepperdine University’s 9/11 Memorial

I was out in California for a meeting and went to check this out before I flew home, it was pretty surreal experience.  One amazing thing about this memorial is the number of flags that aren’t American.

The End of Men?

Hanna Roisin

Hanna Roisin

The idea that a girl-power movement is happening seems to be all over the web and blogosphere right now.

Slate Magazine recently wrote an article about this season’s primetime television being all about women in the dominant role, with one show even being inspired by Hanna Rosin’s 2001 article “The End of Men”.

A few of us at Pompei AD are going to attend NYU’s Intellegence² debate tomorrow where Rosin will be up against Christina Hoff Sommers (well-known for her critique of late-twentieth-century feminism) where we will be asking ourselves, are we really at the forefront of a girl-power movement? And what would this shift of values mean for our broader cultural landscape and the brands that we work with?

Warm Up.

In my book, it’s not officially summer until the first Warm Up at MoMA PS1, which means summer starts this Saturday. Warm Up is PS1’s dance party series in their courtyard, underneath a new architectural installation every year. Check out this year’s lineup at PS1’s website.

Sleep No More

The British theater group Punchdrunk is currently performing Sleep No More in a former nightclub in Chelsea. I can’t recommend it enough. In fact, I just bought tickets to attend again. Do yourself a favor and don’t read any reviews before you go. Also, wear shoes you can run in.

The Creators Project x Coachella

Coachella teamed up with the Creators Project to completely reconceptualize the festival this year.

Carolina Redondo @ Pompei A.D.

Artist Carolina Redondo will be premiering her latest piece, I, Bridge, at the C3 Gallery in our offices this Thursday:

On January 20, 2011 7pm – 9pm, FLUXABLE invites you to a very special presentation by Chilean artist Carolina Redondo. We are thrilled to première Redondo’s new video work “I BRIDGE”.

As part of Carolina Redondo’s three months residence at Flux Factory, she developed and filmed “I BRIDGE” inside an abandoned construction site in Long Island City.

In the video installation “I BRIDGE,” architecture becomes both the constructionin which the image lives and the protagonist of intuition. In “I BRIDGE,” Carolina proposes her body as an exposed text, a layer in the frame, which is behind abuilt membrane. She depicts an encounter between the human form and texture, creating a gesture of access, which permits recognition of the image’s perspective.

Redondo’s work incorporates a variety of media including photography, video and installation. She positions herself in private, ephemeral performances thatoften represent Sisyphean situations or conditions relating to desires, fears, fantasies and struggle. Redondo develops encounters between the grammars of the figure on natural and artificial built-environments, by structuring and reducing them to concrete reified forms and colors, evolving a bodily awareness.

This exclusive event will be hosted by Pompei A.D. at the C3 Gallery located in SoHo at 161 Avenue of Americas, 2nd Floor. Wine and cheese will be served to celebrate the special occasion.
