Disney Store featured on the cover of DDI

The Pompei A.D. designed Disney Store has just been featured on the cover of DDI magazine.

Disney Store ultimately selected New York-based design firm Pompei A.D. to work with its in-house design team to create a fresh look and feel. Paul Gainer, vice president of Disney Store, North America, says the ultimate goal for the redesigned store was to make it “the best 30 minutes of a child’s day.” “Pompei really grasped [our] vision statement from the beginning,” he says. “They created a design aesthetic and experience that went with the vision statement and used it as a filter from the beginning of the process.”

DDI: Urban Outfitters Fifth Avenue

A collaboration between New York-based Pompei A.D. and the Urban Outfitters design team, the new Fifth Avenue Urban Outfitters store in Manhattan artfully blends touches of classic New York with eco-friendly design materials. Parts of the store feature Coney Island boardwalk flooring, while reclaimed maple flooring is used in other sections. The bi-level store also touts the building’s original exposed structure.

Randhir Singh, executive director of design at Pompei A.D., stated that working within a concrete shell, the design team was able to offset this basic material by infusing the floors and walls with explosive patterns of wood planks. The fitting room and stairway design picks up on the use of wood and forms a sculptural landscape within the space. This has resulted in a warm and inviting experience.

DDI’s Retail Design Luminaries

Ron Pompei has been named one of DDI’s 2010 Retail Design Luminaries.

Ron Pompei and his creative consultancy, New York-based Pompei A.D., started thinking about branding in a more expansive way long before it was commonplace. The firm approaches designwith a “C3 philosophy” that merges commerce, culture and community. “This came out of our practice from observing that when we created places for people to be, to see and to be with other people, they became more dynamic and successful,” Pompei says. “So commerce, culture and community really is where we feel brands are going. To be commercially successful, brands have to be culturally relevant and speak to a wider community. Whether Anthropologie, Apple or Whole Foods, there are some brands that have made that leap.”

Lōcale: where art and shoes meet

Pompei A.D.‘s work on the new Aldo concept Lōcale has been written up in the Canadian design magazine Azure.

But the main attraction is the art that’s been commissioned for each store, four of which are already open (with two more are expected in November). Each showcases original art by young Canadian artists, such as Dessa Harhay, who is just starting to break into the Toronto art scene with her animal-based drawings and paintings. Also on the walls are portraits by Calgary photographer Chelsee Ivan, and prints made by the Montréal collective Cinqunquatre.

Distinctive Beauty: The Chelsea Anthropologie

DDI, August 2010

The Chelsea Market location is fresher, cleaner, and more luminous than the other New York Anthropologies,” says Randhir Singh, executive director of design, Pompei A.D. The space references the industrial and maritime nature of the neighborhood, and at the same time maintains Anthropologie’s feminine aesthetic. This personal, location-based store design is aimed at strengthening the customer’s identification with the brand.
