Project Summary

Commissioned by the city of Tempe in Arizona, the Tempe Area of Arts is an innovative approach to community development that utilizes the progressive and valued arts community in Tempe as the foundation for the development of a new mixed-use commercial and residential concept. The project is designed to celebrate and create a home for the well-known artist community in Tempe, while spurring continued development along the largely undeveloped Sal River in West Tempe.

The 12-acre project brings together living, working, community space, and retail under the central themes of creativity, innovation, and artistry. Together with the developer and the city of Tempe, Pompei A.D. developed a concept for a new arts district where artists could live, work, and sell their wares. Viewed as a new cultural hub for the Tempe community, the project will serve as a banner for the city’s progressive attitude, promoting its innovation and creativity, providing a new and inviting retail destination for its residents and visitors, and creating a new social and cultural meeting place.

Consisting of 87 residential units, 65,000 square feet of retail space, 50,000 square feet of creative work space, and 6 acres of public spaces, parks, and outdoor venues, the Area of Arts ushers in a new era of development where real estate value is enhanced through a deep and ongoing connection with culture and creativity. Based on its authentic connection with the local arts community and its positioning as the premier cultural destination in Tempe, residential units and retail spaces will become some of the most sought after in Tempe, garnering the highest rents and greatest sales per square foot.
